A toxic oleum gas leak from a chemical unit in Maharashtra’s Palghar district caused panic on Monday afternoon. Authorities evacuated 458 persons as a precautionary measure following the incident.
The leak occurred at Bhageria Chemicals Company, formerly known as Zenith Chemicals, located in the MIDC D-Zone industrial area. The unit stands near Salwad and Pasthal villages within the industrial belt.
According to District Collector Dr Indu Rani Jakhar, the incident took place around 2 pm. Immediately after receiving information, the administration activated emergency response mechanisms. Fire brigade teams, police personnel and disaster management officials rushed to the spot. Consequently, authorities secured the surrounding area and began evacuation procedures.
Residents Alerted and Evacuated
As a precaution, officials alerted residents of Salwad and Pasthal through social media and local communication channels. Authorities instructed them to follow safety protocols strictly.
Palghar district disaster management cell chief Vivekanand Kadam confirmed that 458 individuals were evacuated from the company premises. Officials described the move as preventive and necessary. Several people reported minor eye irritation due to exposure. However, medical teams responded promptly and provided immediate assistance.
One individual was admitted to the Rural Hospital in Boisar. Additionally, one person each was taken to Anand Hospital and Sanjivani Hospital for observation. Doctors confirmed that all affected individuals remain stable. Therefore, authorities reassured residents that the health impact appears limited.
Leak Site Identified, Situation Under Control
Emergency teams managed to pinpoint the exact source of the leak. Officials stated they are working to plug the affected site safely. Authorities emphasized that the situation remains under control. However, they continue monitoring air quality and surrounding areas closely.
The administration advised residents to stay away from the affected zone. Furthermore, officials urged people to cover their nose and mouth with a wet cloth or mask. Residents were also instructed to use gloves and protective goggles if available. These measures aim to reduce exposure risk.
Safety Guidelines Issued
In case of contact with the gas, authorities advised washing exposed skin or eyes with clean water for 15 to 20 minutes. Officials further recommended seeking medical attention even if symptoms appear mild. The administration cautioned residents against approaching the leak site. Additionally, officials warned people not to touch the leaked chemical under any circumstances.
Importantly, authorities instructed residents not to pour water directly on the leak. They explained that water contact could trigger a strong chemical reaction and intensify fumes. Collector Jakhar appealed to citizens to avoid spreading rumours. She urged everyone to rely only on official updates and instructions.
Swift Coordination Prevents Major Impact
The rapid response by local authorities helped prevent larger consequences. Coordination between the district administration, disaster management teams and hospitals ensured timely evacuation and treatment. Officials continue assessing the chemical unit and surrounding environment. Moreover, authorities are reviewing safety compliance at the facility.
The incident has raised concerns regarding industrial safety measures in the MIDC area. However, officials have assured that investigations will determine the exact cause. For now, the administration maintains that the leak remains contained. Residents have been asked to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing safety efforts.
