Kerala High Court Halts The Kerala Story 2 Days Before Release

Court questions censor board process and stops February 27 theatrical debut amid fresh petition

Kerala High Court on Thursday halted release of The Kerala Story 2. The stay followed a petition challenging the film censor certificate. Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas heard the matter during proceedings.

He directed that the film cannot hit theatres on February 27. That date marked its originally planned theatrical debut. Furthermore, the court questioned the censor board conduct. It stated that authorities did not abide by the rules.

Filmmakers Plan Appeal Before Higher Bench

Meanwhile, India Today learnt that the makers will approach a higher bench. They plan to challenge the single judge order. Reports suggest that producers may file appeal as early as today.

Additionally, the team requested early release of the detailed order. This move will help them challenge it without delay. Sources indicate that the crew now races against time. The February 27 schedule creates urgency. Therefore, producers seek immediate relief to avoid further disruption.

Petition Raised Concerns Over Trailer Content

Director Kamakhya Narayan Singh helmed the project. Vipul Amrutlal Shah produced the film. The narrative claims that young Hindu women face interfaith luring. It alleges assault, loss of rights, and forced conversion to Islam.

After trailer launch, controversy escalated sharply. During Wednesday hearing, the court noted that petitioners concerns were probably genuine. Biologist Sreedev Namboodiri filed objections. He alleged that the trailer showed Kerala in an extremely negative light. He also warned about wider social consequences.

Court Issues Notices to Authorities

Acting on the plea, Kerala High Court issued notices. The court addressed Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It also notified Central Board of Film Certification. Additionally, the bench sent notice to the producer.

Therefore, legal proceedings will continue before final decision emerges.
