Trump Changes Tone On Meloni After Iran Row, Calls Her A Good Person

US President Donald Trump praises Italy PM Giorgia Meloni in Ankara while recalling disagreements over Iran conflict support.

US President Donald Trump praised Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his Ankara visit. Meanwhile, Trump also criticised Meloni over her decision regarding the Iran conflict. He called the Italian leader a “good person” but questioned her refusal to support America.

Consequently, his latest remarks may reduce recent tensions between both leaders.

Trump Recalls Disagreement With Meloni Over Iran

Trump said his relationship with Meloni became slightly difficult during the Iran situation. According to him, Meloni refused to participate and support America’s position. Speaking in Turkey, Trump said, “She refused to get involved, which hurt my relationship with her.”

However, he added that he still liked her and considered her a good person.

Trump also said, “I think she made a mistake.”

Relations Faced Tension After Earlier Comments

Meloni previously remained one of Trump’s close allies. However, relations between them weakened last month. The issue started after Trump claimed Meloni requested a photograph with him during the G7 summit in France. Meloni rejected Trump’s statement and accused him of creating a story.

Additionally, Italy’s foreign minister cancelled his visit to America after the controversy.

Meloni Responded To Trump’s Iran Remarks

Earlier this year, Trump criticised Pope Leo over the Iran war issue. Meloni responded to Trump’s comments during that period. Later, Trump criticised Meloni for refusing support regarding reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The disagreement created further differences between the two leaders.

Trump Recently Shared Meloni Photo On Social Media

Recently, Trump shared a picture of Meloni on Truth Social. The image showed the Italian Prime Minister looking towards Trump. Furthermore, Trump added the caption, “Need a restraining order.”

However, Italy decided not to respond officially to the post. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Trump speaks independently and likes provoking reactions.

He added that Italy chose not to answer those comments.

Italy Previously Denied US Military Landing Request

In March, Italy refused permission for American military aircraft to land at Sigonella Airport. The decision came because Washington did not seek approval from Meloni’s government.
