UPI completes 10 years, India’s digital payment revolution reaches a historic milestone

From a small banking experiment in 2016 to global recognition, UPI records a 13,000-fold rise in transaction volume

August 25, 2016, marked the beginning of a major financial transformation in India. On this day, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) launched and changed digital transactions forever. Now, UPI has completed 10 successful years. Earlier, people hesitated to leave home without cash. However, today UPI QR codes appear everywhere, from small shops to large malls. When testing began in 2016, few expected UPI to become a daily habit so quickly. Within months, the BHIM app launched and accelerated digital payment adoption.

Over the years, UPI added several features to improve convenience and security. Dynamic QR codes arrived in 2017, while UPI 2.0 strengthened safety in 2018. Later, features like AutoPay, Credit Line, and UPI Circle expanded its capabilities. The tax payment limit also increased to ₹5 lakh.

By 2025, users could make direct payments through fingerprint or face unlock on smartphones.

UPI records massive growth in transaction volume

According to Finance Ministry data, UPI achieved nearly 13,000 times growth in transaction volume during the last decade. In financial year 2016-17, UPI recorded only 2 crore transactions. However, the figure crossed 24,162 crore transactions by 2025-26.

Similarly, transaction value increased from ₹0.07 lakh crore to nearly ₹314 lakh crore during this period.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) developed this system under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) supervision. Its technology helped UPI become a major global benchmark for real-time payments. Initially, only 44 banks connected with the system.

However, by July 2026, the network expanded to 741 connected banks.

UPI achieves new records in 2026

The year 2026 became another important period for UPI growth. In May 2026, monthly transaction volume crossed 2,300 crore for the first time. During that month, UPI processed 2,320 crore transactions. Later, July 2026 created another record with 2,366 crore monthly transactions.

This became the highest monthly achievement in UPI’s 10-year journey. Currently, the platform completes more than 66 crore transactions every day.

UPI enables payments without internet access

Many users wonder about people without smartphones. To address this challenge, UPI 123PAY was introduced. Through this service, feature phone users can send money without internet using IVR or missed calls. Recently, the transaction limit increased to ₹10,000. Additionally, UPI Lite wallet helps users complete small payments quickly.

The UPI Lite limit has now increased to ₹5,000.

UPI expands its global footprint

UPI’s impact now extends beyond India. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recognised it as the world’s largest real-time payment system by transaction volume. In 2025, UPI accounted for nearly 49% of global real-time payment transaction volume. Furthermore, Greece and Cambodia joined the network in June 2026. On July 30, 2026, Maldives integration enabled cross-border money transfers.

Currently, UPI operates successfully across 11 countries, including UAE, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, and Maldives.

India prepares UPI for the next decade

The government now focuses on making UPI more accessible. The platform has helped reduce India’s digital divide. Small businesses and people living in remote areas are increasingly joining the digital economy.

Going forward, the focus will remain on adding new users and improving technology. Through these efforts, UPI aims to maintain India’s leadership in digital payments.
