Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh returned outside jail on a 21-day furlough. He came out from Rohtak’s Sunaria jail. Following his release, Congress strongly criticised the BJP. The party accused BJP of providing support to him. Congress Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Pawan Khera targeted the BJP over the matter. He linked the issue with women empowerment claims.
Congress attacks BJP over Ram Rahim release
Pawan Khera said BJP’s statements about women reservation and empowerment were only a drama. He compared them with a cheap television serial.
He claimed the party supports rape accused individuals and works against women. He also mentioned Ram Rahim’s conviction and sentence. According to Khera, Ram Rahim is serving a 20-year sentence in a rape case. He said authorities have granted him parole 17 times since conviction. Khera added that Ram Rahim spent more than 450 days outside jail after his arrest in 2017.
He appealed to people to remove BJP if they want safety for their daughters.
Ram Rahim receives 17th release after conviction
After his conviction in August 2017, this marks Ram Rahim’s 17th release from jail.
This year alone, he has come outside prison for the third time. This time, authorities granted him a 21-day furlough. During the furlough period, he will stay at the Dera headquarters in Sirsa. He has received several furloughs and paroles after conviction.
Supreme Court comments on Haryana government stance
Earlier, Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted Ram Rahim in the 2002 journalist murder case in March. A special CBI court had earlier convicted him in the case. The court had awarded him life imprisonment. After the High Court decision, family members approached the Supreme Court. During the August 10 hearing, the Supreme Court commented on Haryana government’s approach.
Ram Rahim’s lawyer informed the court that Haryana government had not challenged the High Court order.
Chief Justice Surya Kant responded that the court knew the state government might not approach an appeal.
