External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday. During the meeting, Jaishankar delivered Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings to Putin. According to the Kremlin statement, Putin said Jaishankar’s visit reflects the decades-old relationship between Russia and India.
Moreover, Putin promised that Russia would support India during difficult situations.
India-Russia trade turnover continues rising
Putin highlighted the growth in India-Russia trade turnover during the discussion. He said he felt happy seeing trade increase this year. He also mentioned a decline during the previous year. However, Putin said the current growth reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal focus on strengthening Russia-India relations.
Putin also asked Jaishankar to convey his greetings to Prime Minister Modi.
Furthermore, he expressed hope of meeting Modi soon under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation framework.
He added that both leaders may meet again this year according to their schedules.
Russia to strengthen energy and fertiliser cooperation
Putin said both countries have several important issues on their agenda. He highlighted energy, fertiliser supplies, nuclear power and high-tech cooperation. Additionally, Putin said Russia is working to resolve fertiliser supply issues for Indian farmers. He added that Russia will continue increasing these supplies in the future. Meanwhile, Jaishankar began his remarks by sharing Prime Minister Modi’s greetings.
He said Modi gave him a message to deliver during the meeting.
Jaishankar highlights growing economic partnership
Jaishankar mentioned the intergovernmental commission meeting held earlier that morning.
He said he carried a detailed report on economic cooperation, nuclear energy and fertilisers.
Furthermore, he stated that India and Russia have witnessed significant growth in economic cooperation. Jaishankar also said Prime Minister Modi looks forward to meeting Putin at the SCO summit. He expressed hope that Putin would participate in the BRICS summit hosted by India.
Officials attend high-level discussion
Jaishankar thanked Putin for the honour and highlighted strong bilateral cooperation.
During the meeting, several senior officials joined the discussion.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Denis Manturov and Yuri Ushakov attended the meeting.
India’s Ambassador to Russia Vinay Kumar and other officials also participated.
