A major shift could soon reshape the food delivery experience. Uber has announced a partnership with drone delivery company Zipline. Under this deal, Uber Eats orders could travel directly to customers by air. Pizzas, burgers and other items could reach homes without using roads. The companies describe this as one of America’s biggest food delivery drone partnerships.
Dallas and Houston will see the first deliveries
The service will begin in Dallas and Houston, where Zipline already operates. Both cities could receive drone deliveries by the end of this year. Afterwards, the companies plan to expand across dozens of other American cities. Currently, Uber says customers wait around 30 minutes for orders. However, Zipline drones could reduce that time to just five or 10 minutes. Consequently, customers could receive food within minutes of placing an order. Deliveries could reach rooftops or balconies directly.
Aiming for one million drone deliveries daily
Uber and Zipline have set an ambitious target for the end of 2029. Together, they aim to complete one million drone deliveries every day. If achieved, that would mean more than 36.5 crore deliveries annually. Therefore, drone delivery could become part of everyday food ordering rather than remain a niche technology.
Zipline already operates across four continents and has completed around 27 lakh deliveries. Those deliveries have included more than two crore items. Moreover, the company completes one delivery every 20 seconds. Its network also serves more than 5,000 hospitals. This track record supports Zipline’s delivery technology and reliability. Under the partnership, Uber has made a strategic investment in Zipline. However, both companies have not disclosed the investment amount.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said quick commerce could become larger than traditional food delivery. Therefore, he sees the partnership as a major boost for Uber Eats’ next growth phase.
Uber faces competition from other drone players
Uber is not alone in pursuing drone delivery. DoorDash is also developing its own drone programme. Recently, the company received required certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. Meanwhile, Amazon and Walmart already provide drone delivery services in selected markets.
