Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress received major relief from the Calcutta High Court. The court allowed the party to operate its bank accounts for daily expenses.
Earlier, authorities had frozen TMC bank accounts. However, the court approval came with a specific condition for the party.
The party must operate accounts under strict supervision of an officer appointed by the court.
Court Questions Police Action In Account Freeze Case
During the hearing, the court questioned the police over their quick action. The judges said they were not satisfied with the evidence shown for freezing accounts.
Furthermore, the court observed that police failed to find supporting evidence.
Meanwhile, the TMC rebel group cannot approach the special officer until the Election Commission of India takes a decision.
What Is The TMC Fund Case?
The Enforcement Directorate started investigating bank accounts linked with an alleged TMC fund case. These accounts contained around Rs 440 crore.
Additionally, the agency conducted raids at several locations. The searches also included an office of a private aviation company.
The case relates to disputed accounts that appeared after assembly elections. Authorities had already placed debit freezes on those accounts.
TMC Faces Internal Split After Bengal Election
After the Bengal election, Trinamool Congress divided into two groups. Nineteen party MPs became rebels during this dispute.
The rebel list includes Kakoli Ghosh, Shatabdi Roy, Bapi Haldar, Sayoni Ghosh, and Yusuf Pathan.
Moreover, the matter reached the Election Commission. The commission sent notices to both groups.
The court decision now gives TMC temporary relief while the wider dispute continues before election authorities.
