Kerala’s Power Shift Begins As VD Satheesan Takes Oath After 10-Year Wait

VD Satheesan has become Kerala’s new Chief Minister, while 20 ministers, including five IUML MLAs, also took oath in Thiruvananthapuram.

VD Satheesan Takes Charge In Kerala

Two weeks after Kerala’s assembly election results, the UDF formed its new government. VD Satheesan became Kerala’s new Chief Minister. Governor Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath to him. The Congress-led UDF held the swearing-in ceremony at Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Along with Satheesan, 20 other MLAs also took oath as ministers.

IUML Gets Five Ministers In New Government

In addition, five Indian Union Muslim League MLAs entered the ministry. The Muslim League remains a key Congress ally in Kerala. The party has 22 MLAs in the state assembly. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge attended the ceremony. Moreover, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi reached the venue. Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi also joined the event.

The new Kerala ministry includes VD Satheesan as Chief Minister. The other ministers include PK Kunhalikutty, Ramesh Chennithala, K Muraleedharan, Sunny Joseph, Mons Joseph, Shibu Baby John, Anoop Jacob, CP John, AP Anil Kumar, N Samsudheen, PC Vishnunath, Roji M John, Bindu Krishna, M Liju, KM Shaji, PK Basheer, VE Abdul Gafoor, T Siddique, KA Tulsi, and O J Janish.

Congress Returns After A Decade

With Satheesan’s oath, Pinarayi Vijayan’s decade-long rule formally ended in Kerala. Vijayan served as a senior CPI(M) leader during that period. Meanwhile, the Congress-led UDF returned to power after 10 years. Congress last came to power under late former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

Kharge Calls It A Historic Win

Mallikarjun Kharge called the result a historic victory for Kerala. He said everyone felt very happy about the mandate. He added that the day carried special meaning for Kerala’s people. According to Kharge, UDF has returned after 10 years. He also said people rejected LDF’s decade-long rule. Therefore, he stressed that UDF must now give Kerala a good government.

UDF Secures A Strong Mandate

Recently, the United Democratic Front made a strong comeback in Kerala’s assembly election. The alliance won 102 seats in the 140-member assembly. Meanwhile, Congress alone secured a record 63 seats. Now, the new government faces public expectations after a decisive mandate.
