Air India Introduces Fuel Surcharge, Flight Tickets to Become Costlier

Air India announces a new fuel surcharge due to rising aviation turbine fuel prices. Consequently, passengers on domestic and several international routes may pay higher ticket fares.

Passengers planning air travel soon may need to pay slightly higher ticket prices. Moreover, rising airline costs have started affecting travellers directly. Airlines are currently facing continuous increases in aviation turbine fuel prices. Consequently, companies are adjusting fares to manage these operational expenses. Therefore, Air India has now decided to introduce a new fuel surcharge.

Furthermore, the airline confirmed that the surcharge will apply on both domestic and several international routes. According to the airline, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have increased jet fuel prices. As a result, airline operating costs have risen significantly. Therefore, passengers may now pay more while booking tickets.

Domestic Flights Will See Additional Fuel Charges

According to the airline decision, domestic tickets will include a fuel surcharge starting from March 12. Specifically, passengers will pay an additional ₹399 on every domestic ticket. Therefore, travellers must pay this extra charge along with base fare and taxes.

Additionally, this rule will apply not only to Air India flights. The surcharge will also apply to Air India Express flights. Consequently, passengers travelling within India may notice higher total ticket prices.

Furthermore, the airline confirmed that flights to SAARC countries will also include this surcharge. According to the airline, rising jet fuel prices have sharply increased operating costs. Therefore, the airline introduced this surcharge to balance increasing expenses.

International Routes Will Also See Surcharge Changes

Meanwhile, the airline has also revised fuel surcharges for international routes. Firstly, passengers travelling to West Asia will pay an additional $10 per ticket. Furthermore, the surcharge for Africa routes has increased to $90 per ticket.

Previously, the amount was lower, however the airline raised it due to rising fuel expenses. Moreover, flights to Southeast Asia will now include a surcharge of $60. Consequently, ticket costs on these routes may also increase.

Interestingly, the airline will now apply this surcharge on Singapore flights as well. Earlier, these flights did not include any fuel surcharge. However, rising jet fuel prices have forced the airline to introduce the charge.

Rising Fuel Costs Driving Airline Decisions

Air India explained that geopolitical developments in the Gulf region have increased aviation fuel prices. Consequently, airline operating costs have risen sharply. Therefore, the company introduced this surcharge to manage expenses.

Moreover, the airline indicated that ticket prices may rise overall in the coming period. Rising jet fuel prices continue to impact airline finances significantly. Therefore, passengers may see higher ticket costs across several routes.
