During Beijing summit, Xi Jinping warns of US decline citing Biden’s term, while Trump defends America’s progress and global strength.

Xi Warns About US Decline, Trump Counters With Progress

During his China visit, President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Moreover, Xi reportedly criticized the United States, claiming its global influence is waning. However, Trump clarified that Xi’s remarks referred to the previous Biden administration, not his leadership.

Trump explained on Truth Social that Xi called the US “a falling nation” due to the damage during Biden’s four-year term. Moreover, Trump said Xi correctly noted the previous challenges but emphasized that America is now an emerging power.

Thucydides Trap Reference and Strategic Context

Although Xi did not clearly specify where he made the statement, he had warned about the “Thucydides Trap” earlier. The theory, proposed by Harvard professor Graham Allison, suggests that rising powers often challenge established ones, creating tensions. Historically, Athens’ rise threatened Sparta, eventually leading to war.

Xi reiterated that the world stands at a crossroads. He suggested that China and the US could collaborate to avoid the Thucydides Trap. Moreover, Xi highlighted that major powers must develop a new model for mutual relations.

Trump Emphasizes Achievements During His 16-Month Term

In his post, Trump highlighted 16 months of “strong progress” under his leadership. He cited the record stock market, robust employment, increased investments, and military strength as proof. Furthermore, Trump claimed that America’s influence expanded worldwide.

Additionally, he wrote that Xi praised several accomplishments of his administration during the summit. Trump noted that two years ago, the US appeared to be declining, but today it emerges stronger. Finally, he expressed optimism that despite ongoing tensions, Washington and Beijing’s relationship will become stronger than before.
