Vijay Thalapathy has cleared the floor test challenge in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Therefore, his TVK-led coalition government has secured the confidence vote. During the floor test, Vijay’s government received support from 144 MLAs. However, major opposition parties walked out before voting began.
With this result, the TVK-led alliance proved its strength inside the House. Moreover, the vote gave Vijay’s new government a crucial legislative shield. The floor test had become a major political test for his coalition.
TVK Emerged Strongest, Yet Needed Allies
Tamil Nadu has a 234-member Assembly. In this House, the TVK alliance emerged as the biggest political force. However, it did not have enough seats to cross the majority mark alone.
So, Vijay formed the government with support from several groups. Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and Indian Union Muslim League backed him. Additionally, some independents and smaller parties also supported his government.
During the floor test, this wider coalition reached 144 MLA votes. Consequently, Vijay gained more support than his original alliance numbers suggested. The result also showed how post-election backing shaped the government.
Confidence Motion And Opposition Walkout
After Assembly proceedings began, Chief Minister Vijay introduced the confidence motion. Then, parties supporting the ruling side spoke in favour of the government. Meanwhile, opposition leaders targeted the government on several issues during discussion.
However, the major opposition parties left the House before voting started. After that, the ruling alliance completed the floor test process. Finally, Vijay’s government won the trust vote in the Assembly.
Seat Numbers Behind The Political Equation
In the Assembly election, TVK became the largest party with 108 seats. Still, it fell 10 seats short of the majority figure. Vijay won from two Assembly seats. Therefore, he will need to vacate one seat.
After Vijay leaves one constituency, TVK’s tally will come down to 107. Meanwhile, Congress has 5 MLAs among TVK’s allies. CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML each have 2 MLAs.
Together, these allies take the coalition’s Assembly strength to 120. However, Vijay’s party secured support from 144 MLAs during the floor test. Now, this number gives the TVK-led government a stronger position inside Tamil Nadu’s Assembly.
