14 Arrested After BJP Youth Wing’s Complaint
Rajat Jaiswal, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing in Varanasi, filed a formal complaint. Based on his complaint, the police registered a case and arrested the 14 individuals involved. The police acted swiftly following demands from BJP leaders for immediate arrests.
Video of the Incident Goes Viral
After their Iftar, the accused filmed the event and posted the video online. The video quickly gained attention and provoked strong reactions. As a result, BJP leaders filed a complaint with the police. Following this, the authorities initiated an investigation into the incident.
Allegations of Desecration and Religious Insensitivity
The accused were reportedly sitting on a boat in the Ganges when they performed Iftar. After their meal, they allegedly threw chicken bones into the river. Many people viewed this act as disrespectful to the Ganges, considering it an offense to Hindu sentiments and a violation of the river’s sanctity.
Legal Action and Charges Filed
The police filed charges against the accused under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Water Pollution Act. These charges included Section 295A, which addresses offenses committed with intent to hurt religious sentiments. Other sections related to environmental protection were also invoked.

Rajat Jaiswal expressed deep concern over the incident, highlighting the significance of the Ganges to Hindus. Hindus from around the world come to the river to seek blessings and worship. Discarding food into the Ganges was seen as a deliberate attempt to insult Hindu beliefs and the sacred river. Following the incident, numerous Hindu organizations expressed their outrage and condemned the actions of the accused.
