After the Election Commission’s interim order, the internal fight over the Trinamool Congress name and symbol has intensified. The Ritabrata Banerjee faction submitted three new names to the Election Commission on Friday. The proposed names include Nationalist Trinamool Congress, Democratic Trinamool Congress, and West Bengal Trinamool Congress.
The rebel group also selected three symbols for consideration. These include a blackboard, envelope, and torch. Ritabrata Banerjee took this decision after holding an online meeting with party leaders.
Both factions submit choices before Election Commission
Earlier, sources said TMC founder and chairperson Mamata Banerjee also shared her preferred party names and symbols. She responded to the Election Commission’s interim order regarding the dispute.
However, Mamata Banerjee strongly opposed the manner of the interim order. According to information, she sent her response shortly after receiving the order. She submitted the reply at 11:36 pm on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission issued its interim order on Thursday, September 17. The order came after hearing both the Mamata Banerjee faction and the rebel faction.
The Commission stated that neither group could use the All India Trinamool Congress name and symbol. Therefore, both factions had to provide alternative names and symbols by Friday, September 18, at 11 am.
Both groups submitted their choices before the deadline. The Ritabrata faction welcomed the Commission’s decision. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee expressed strong opposition.
The dispute has emerged before assembly by-elections in West Bengal’s Nandigram and Rejinagar seats. The elections for both seats will take place on October 6.
Both Mamata Banerjee and Ritabrata Banerjee factions have fielded candidates for these contests. Now, the Election Commission’s final decision on the party name and symbol remains awaited.
