Supreme Court Takes Note Of Delhi’s Saty Niketan Collapse, Says Issue Needs National-Level Review

The Supreme Court has taken up the Saty Niketan building collapse case, with Justice Amanullah saying the matter requires wider attention beyond Delhi.

The Delhi Satya Niketan building collapse case has reached the Supreme Court after a tragic incident. The court heard concerns about safety violations and illegal construction issues. Senior advocate Ajit Kumar Sinha assisted the court during the hearing. He informed judges about the accident and ongoing concerns. The bench took the matter seriously and scheduled a hearing for Thursday, September 10. Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah said the issue requires examination at a national level. He also indicated that the court has certain thoughts regarding the matter.

Amicus Curiae Highlights Delhi Building Collapse

Amicus curiae Ajit Kumar Sinha presented the matter before Justice Amanullah’s bench. He explained that Delhi continues its survey process regarding illegal constructions.

Meanwhile, the Satya Niketan tragedy occurred during this ongoing process. The incident reportedly killed seven children. Sinha also informed the judges about Delhi High Court’s recent orders.

According to Sinha, the Delhi High Court passed certain directions on Monday. The Supreme Court noted similarities between both matters.

Solicitor General Calls Incident Extremely Distressing

After the amicus curiae raised the issue, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta addressed the court. He described the incident as extremely horrifying.

Furthermore, Mehta expressed condolences for the children and their parents. He also presented the Delhi High Court order before the Supreme Court.

The Solicitor General said the High Court had taken the matter seriously. He added that authorities were taking steps regarding the situation.

Justice Amanullah observed that the High Court order overlaps with the Supreme Court matter. Therefore, the court considered a possible transfer if required.

Previous Supreme Court Directions On Safety Issues

Earlier, during the July 9 hearing, the Supreme Court mentioned incidents from Saket, Malviya Nagar, and Lucknow. The judges discussed illegal construction and safety violations.

The court said it would fix individual responsibility among officials responsible for negligence. It also directed the creation of a special inspection team.

The team includes two senior professors from IIT Delhi’s civil department. It also includes two draftsmen for assessment work.

Details Of The Saty Niketan Accident

The Satya Niketan building collapsed around 1:30 pm on Sunday. The structure served as a boys’ paying guest accommodation. Rescue teams removed 12 people from the debris. However, seven people lost their lives in the incident. Police arrested building owner 75-year-old Urmila Gupta. They also arrested her 81-year-old husband Hariram Gupta and son Mahesh Gupta.

Additionally, MCD officials faced action after the collapse. The civic body suspended South Zone Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar and four engineers.
