Satya Niketan Collapse Case May Reach SC As Court Flags Bigger Safety Issue

Supreme Court signals transfer of Delhi’s Satya Niketan building collapse case from High Court, focusing on illegal construction and land use concerns.

The Supreme Court may take over the Satya Niketan building collapse case from Delhi High Court. The court indicated this move during Thursday’s hearing on illegal construction and safety violations.

The bench said it wants to focus its hearing on land use issues. Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah said the court remains concerned about the entire country.

He added that people would understand the court’s objective after two months.

Supreme Court Raises Concerns Over Residential Areas

The Supreme Court said residential areas should not allow activities that affect public movement. The court also highlighted difficulties faced by children while playing.

Furthermore, the bench indicated that it may transfer the Satya Niketan case to itself from Delhi High Court.

A bench of Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Justice R. Mahadevan explained its broader focus. The court will examine commercial use of areas marked as residential in Delhi-NCR.

Five-Storey Building Collapse Killed Seven People

A five-storey building collapsed in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on September 6. The incident killed seven people and injured five others.

Following the collapse, police arrested the building owner, 75-year-old Urmila Gupta. Officials also arrested her 81-year-old retired Air Force husband Hariram Gupta.

Their son Mahesh Gupta, aged 52, was also arrested in the case.

Police Probe Points Towards Wall Removal

Delhi Police stated that questioning one arrested accused revealed key details. A wall was removed to create a shop on the ground floor.

According to police, this alteration caused the entire building to collapse.

Meanwhile, authorities continue investigating the factors behind the incident.

MCD Continues Action Against Unsafe Buildings

After the Satya Niketan tragedy, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi continued demolition actions across all 12 zones.

The civic body targeted dangerous buildings, unauthorised construction and violations of building rules.

Over the past two to three days, MCD teams conducted actions in several areas. These included Vishwas Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Jamia Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, Tilak Nagar, Karampura, Karol Bagh, Ramesh Nagar, Mansarover Garden, Chandni Chowk and Nehru Vihar.
