At least 21 people were killed across Pakistan on Sunday during violent anti-US protests. Demonstrations erupted after reports surfaced about the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Clashes quickly intensified between protesters and security forces in multiple cities. Consequently, authorities struggled to contain rapidly escalating violence.
In Karachi, Pakistan’s commercial capital, hundreds of protesters marched toward the US Consulate. Police attempted to block their path; however, demonstrators managed to breach security lines.
Chaos at US Consulate in Karachi
Police fired tear gas and carried out aerial firing to disperse the crowd. Despite these efforts, dozens of protesters entered the consulate premises. Videos circulating on social media showed broken windows and flames inside part of the reception area. Moreover, angry crowds torched a police check post outside the compound.

Demonstrators also burned tires and chanted slogans condemning the United States. Consequently, tensions remained high throughout the southern district of Karachi. The Sindh provincial government later formed a committee to investigate the clashes and resulting deaths. Additionally, officials urged citizens to register their protests peacefully. Expressing sorrow over the casualties, authorities appealed for calm and restraint.
Deadly Clashes in Gilgit-Baltistan
Violence also spread to the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region, where at least 11 protesters died. Interim Information Minister Ghulam Abbas confirmed fatalities in multiple districts. Seven protesters were killed in Gilgit district, while four others died in Skardu valley. Furthermore, Abbas stated that 40 additional people sustained injuries during clashes.

There were also reports that one security personnel died; however, officials did not confirm the claim. Protesters in Skardu reportedly set a United Nations office on fire. Consequently, authorities placed the region on high alert amid ongoing demonstrations. Regional government spokesperson Shabbir Mir confirmed that security forces intensified patrols in several districts.

Tensions Rise in Islamabad
In the federal capital Islamabad, police blocked roads leading to the Diplomatic Enclave. The enclave houses several foreign embassies, including the US mission. Initially, protesters gathered outside a hotel and staged demonstrations peacefully. However, as the crowd grew larger, participants attempted to march toward the US Embassy. Security forces stopped the procession and denied access to the enclave.
Subsequently, tensions escalated when some individuals tried to force entry. Law enforcement responded by deploying tear gas and conducting aerial firing. As a result, authorities dispersed the crowd before it reached diplomatic premises. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi later arrived at the scene and engaged directly with demonstrators. He urged them to remain peaceful and held negotiations with protest representatives.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Islamabad issued a security advisory to its citizens. The mission urged Americans to avoid large gatherings and remain alert. The advisory also asked citizens to update their Smart Traveler Enrollment Program registration. Therefore, diplomatic missions heightened vigilance amid continuing unrest.
Separately, Pakistani broadcaster Geo TV reported hacking attempts and disruption during the unrest. The channel stated that its television feed aired inappropriate messages temporarily.
