Why Is Online Food More Expensive? Swiggy And Zomato Bills Reveal Hidden Charges

Ordering food through delivery apps feels convenient, but extra fees and increased menu prices often make online meals costlier than dining at restaurants.

Digital services have changed daily life significantly. Now people can order medicines, groceries and restaurant food online within minutes.

Moreover, food delivery apps save time and remove travel worries. Customers simply choose dishes, complete payment and receive meals at home.

However, this convenience often comes with additional expenses. A social media post recently highlighted how online food orders can cost more than restaurant dining.

Viral Post Shows Price Difference

A user named @idlebrainjeevi shared a post on X showing different prices for the same dishes. The post displayed a restaurant bill from Hyderabad.

The user ordered three items from the menu. These included Neyyi Karam Onion Dosa, Neyyi Pongal and Filter Coffee.

When the user ate at the restaurant, the total bill reached ₹230. However, ordering identical items through Swiggy created a ₹436 bill.

Therefore, the difference between both bills was ₹206. The post attracted several reactions from social media users.

Why Do Online Food Orders Cost More?

Online platforms often show higher menu prices compared with restaurant dine-in rates. Restaurants may increase prices by 20% to 40% on apps.

Additionally, platforms like Swiggy and Zomato charge restaurants commissions between 18% and 28% per order.

Therefore, restaurants adjust menu prices to protect their profit margins. This increases the final amount paid by customers.

Furthermore, dine-in customers usually avoid separate packaging costs. However, online orders may include packaging and container charges between ₹20 and ₹50.

Also, delivery companies have increased platform fees recently. Customers without premium subscriptions may pay delivery charges ranging from ₹35 to ₹80.

During rain, late-night deliveries and festival peak periods, delivery charges may increase further. Moreover, higher food prices on apps also attract GST between 5% and 18%.

Consequently, these additional costs make online food ordering more expensive than eating directly at restaurants.
