9 Days Under Debris, Then A Miracle In Nepal Tunnel Rescue

Two workers survived inside Nepal’s Trishuli-3A hydropower tunnel after nine days, while teams continue searching for others.

A major rescue breakthrough emerged in Nepal nine days after deadly floods struck the country. Rescue teams pulled two people alive from debris inside the Trishuli-3A hydropower project tunnel in Rasuwa district. According to Kathmandu Post, teams rescued both workers after nine days inside the tunnel. Meanwhile, rescuers continue searching for other missing labourers.

The severe floods hit Nepal on August 26 and caused massive destruction across several regions. Furthermore, authorities reported several workers trapped inside the Trishuli-3A hydropower station tunnel. During the rescue operation, teams heard voices from inside the tunnel. Therefore, hopes remained alive that trapped people could survive.

Rescuers identify two survivors from tunnel

According to National Independent Party MP and engineer Shri Ram Neupane, rescuers identified the survivors as mechanical foreman Sanjay Sah and mechanical supervisor Kabir Maharjan. Neupane joined the search operation after floods struck on August 26. Firstly, rescue teams brought Sanjay Sah outside the tunnel on Friday. Later, they safely rescued Kabir Maharjan.

Moreover, rescue teams increased efforts after finding both workers. Shri Ram Neupane said teams received information about more people inside the tunnel. Therefore, rescuers started searching other sections of the structure. Earlier, teams heard voices and attempted communication with trapped individuals.

Rescue teams hear “okay” from trapped workers

During the operation, rescuers called out inside the tunnel and assured workers of help. In response, a voice from inside replied, “Okay.” Later, teams confirmed the possibility of multiple people remaining trapped. Consequently, the Nepal Army and Armed Police Force intensified their rescue efforts.

The August 26 flood severely damaged the Trishuli River corridor in central Nepal. Additionally, the disaster affected hydropower projects and important road connections. The flood has caused 1,252 deaths, while rescue teams continue searching tunnels and other structures.
