A document claimed to show Lenskart’s office dress code guidelines sparked a major controversy online. Moreover, users highlighted that the document disallowed bindi and tilak while allowing hijab. As a result, backlash intensified quickly across social media platforms.
The document mentioned that sindoor must remain minimal and should not spread across the forehead. Additionally, it clearly stated that wearing bindi was not allowed in the workplace. Furthermore, it also said clutcher use was not permitted.
Rules On Hijab And Religious Items Raise Questions
Meanwhile, the same document allowed hijab but defined specific conditions for wearing it. It stated that hijabs must be black and provide medium chest coverage. Moreover, it added that the headscarf should not cover the company logo.
However, the document also mentioned that wearing a burkha inside the store was not allowed. Additionally, it stated that religious threads or wristbands like kalawa must be removed.
These contrasting rules triggered sharp criticism from users online. Author and activist Shefali Vaidya publicly questioned the policy on X. She directly asked Peyush Bansal why hijab was allowed but bindi and kalawa were restricted.
Peyush Bansal Calls Document Outdated
In response, Lenskart founder and CEO Peyush Bansal addressed the controversy directly. He stated that the document does not reflect the company’s present guidelines. Moreover, he explained that the grooming policy has evolved over time.
He clarified that outdated documents do not represent the company’s current values. Additionally, he apologized for confusion and concern caused by the situation.
Company Says No Restrictions On Religious Expression
Bansal further stated that Lenskart does not restrict any form of religious expression. He confirmed that employees can wear bindi, tilak, and other symbols freely. Moreover, he said the company regularly reviews its internal policies.
He added that thousands of employees across Bharat proudly display their culture and faith. According to him, these employees represent the company’s identity.
Strong Business Growth Continues Amid Row

Recent reports show strong financial growth for the company. Its share price reached ₹547 recently. Additionally, net profit rose sharply to ₹1.31 billion from ₹18.5 million earlier. Revenue also increased by 38.8 percent to ₹23.08 billion.
