External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed India-US relations during an event in New York. He said global diplomacy has entered a changing phase.
According to Jaishankar, America once believed India should avoid having many options. He said Washington wanted New Delhi to focus mainly on their relationship.
However, he highlighted that America always maintained its own choices. Therefore, Jaishankar said, “That pretence is over today.”
Jaishankar Talks About A Multipolar World
Jaishankar said countries now work openly with each other across different partnerships. Furthermore, he said the world is moving towards a multipolar system.
He made these remarks on Monday at an Asia Society event in New York. Former US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel also attended the programme.
Meanwhile, Jaishankar explained that diplomatic appearances have changed. Countries now engage with each other more openly, he said.
India And US Follow Changing Global Approach
The External Affairs Minister said this shift reflects a wider transformation in international relations. According to him, nations are adapting to a multipolar global order.
Additionally, Jaishankar compared approaches taken by India and the United States. He said America has managed diverse partnership networks together.
He added that India has followed a similar approach for a long time. Therefore, he described this change as part of evolving global relations.
Washington’s Foreign Policy Direction Draws Attention
At the Asia Society programme, Jaishankar pointed towards changes in Washington’s foreign policy outlook. He mentioned America’s engagement with China, Russia, Ukraine and other regions.
Jaishankar said Washington now follows a method that people earlier associated with India. He added that America is adopting what India has practised earlier.
