India’s Growth Defies Inflation Concerns as GDP Surges 7.8% in Q1

India’s real GDP grew 7.8% during April-June 2026, while nominal GDP recorded 10.3% growth despite continuing global economic challenges

Rising inflation had raised concerns about India’s economic performance this year. However, fresh Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data offer a different picture. India’s real GDP grew 7.8% during April-June 2026. This period represents the first quarter of financial year 2026-27. Therefore, the latest figures show that economic growth maintained a strong pace.

MoSPI Releases First Quarter Figures

MoSPI released the first-quarter GDP figures on Monday, August 31. The data showed 10.3% growth in nominal GDP during April-June. According to the government, global economic challenges continued during this period. Nevertheless, India maintained its growth pace despite those difficulties.

2022-23 Becomes The New Base Year

This latest GDP series uses 2022-23 as its base year. The government released a new annual and quarterly GDP series on February 27, 2026. Subsequently, officials released provisional GDP figures for financial year 2025-26 on June 5, 2026. The latest calculations therefore follow the revised series introduced earlier this year.

Earlier GDP Figures Also Receive Updates

MoSPI has also updated annual figures covering financial years 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25. Officials used fresh data alongside figures from various government sources. Additionally, the ministry updated quarterly GDP figures from Q1 of 2022-23 through Q4 of 2025-26. Officials also incorporated new data into provisional figures for financial year 2025-26.

What Goes Into GDP Calculation?

GDP calculations include industrial output, prices and banking services. The ministry also uses administrative data received from different government departments. Alongside GDP figures, MoSPI released data covering consumption, investment and other expenditure. These figures use both constant prices and current prices. Constant-price calculations use 2022-23 as their reference year.

What The Latest Numbers Show

The latest release offers a clearer view of India’s economic performance during April-June 2026. Real GDP growth reached 7.8%, while nominal GDP advanced 10.3%. Meanwhile, updated historical figures reflect newer data across multiple economic areas. The revised series also provides updated quarterly and annual measurements.

For now, the first-quarter figures show continued economic expansion despite wider challenges. Further updates will incorporate revised information as government data changes.
