Harish Rana, admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, has surprised doctors with his stable health. Despite being deprived of food and water for 10 days, he remains stable. He has been under passive euthanasia, where nutrition is withheld, yet his condition continues to be stable.
Stability Despite No Food or Water
Harish, a resident of Ghaziabad, entered AIIMS on March 14. On March 15, his liquid diet was stopped, followed by water being withheld on March 17. Despite this drastic step, his condition showed no deterioration, which surprised his medical team.
Treatment Under Palliative Care
Harish’s treatment is taking place in AIIMS’s Palliative Care Unit. Dr. Seema Mishra, who leads the unit, explained that usually, when someone is deprived of food and water for such a long period, they would show discomfort. However, Harish, who has been in a deep coma for 13 years, does not respond in the expected way.
Pain Management and Focus on Comfort
The doctors at AIIMS have focused on managing Harish’s pain and ensuring his comfort during this process. They are giving him pain-relief medications, aiming for a peaceful passing without discomfort. Harish’s family receives regular updates on his condition, which helps them stay informed.
Family’s Approach to Harish’s Final Journey
Harish’s lawyer, Manish Jain, stated that the family is receiving ongoing counseling to manage this sensitive situation. His family, affiliated with the Brahma Kumari Rajyog Institute, does not want the process to be prolonged unnecessarily. They believe that Harish should pass peacefully, without any suffering.
