Congress Stuns BJP in Datia as Ghanshyam Singh Returns With a Decisive Victory

Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh defeated BJP’s Ashutosh Tiwari in the Datia bypoll, bringing major relief for the party in Madhya Pradesh.

The Datia assembly bypoll became a major political discussion across Madhya Pradesh and India. Congress retained the seat after defeating BJP in the contest. BJP fielded Ashutosh Tiwari, while Congress selected senior leader Ghanshyam Singh. During counting, Ghanshyam maintained a continuous lead. Finally, Ghanshyam Singh defeated Ashutosh Tiwari by 6,029 votes. BJP replaced former Home Minister Narottam Mishra with Ashutosh Tiwari for this election.

Congress supporters celebrated the victory with enthusiasm. However, the official announcement of Ghanshyam Singh’s win remained pending.

Ghanshyam Singh’s political identity in Madhya Pradesh

Ghanshyam Singh remains a well-known political figure from Datia and nearby regions. He belongs among Congress’s senior leaders. Moreover, people recognise him as a grassroots politician. He maintains regular contact with citizens across his areas. Ghanshyam Singh heads the Datia royal family. He has remained associated with Congress for several years.

Additionally, he holds strong influence in Datia and Sewdha assembly areas. His speeches and public connect helped him build a separate political identity.

A journey filled with victories and setbacks

Ghanshyam Singh’s political career experienced several ups and downs. He represented Datia twice and Sewdha once as an MLA.

He first contested elections on a Congress ticket in 1993 and secured victory. However, he faced defeat in 1998. Later, he won again in 2003 and became an MLA. In 2008, BJP candidate Narottam Mishra defeated him. Afterward, BJP’s Pradeep Agrawal defeated Ghanshyam Singh in 2013. Meanwhile, Ghanshyam contested from Sewdha in 2018.

He defeated BJP’s Radhelal Baghel and became an MLA again. However, Pradeep Agrawal defeated him from Sewdha in the 2023 election.

Ghanshyam Singh rebuilt support after setbacks

Despite defeats, Ghanshyam Singh focused on strengthening Congress. He continued working among party workers and citizens. His political activities expanded beyond Datia. He also worked extensively in Sewdha and won elections there. Therefore, Congress chose him for the Datia bypoll. The party needed a leader with strong regional acceptance.

The decision came after Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti lost his membership following a case conviction.
