Food delivery users will soon see important product details before placing orders. FSSAI has planned stricter rules for packaged food sold through quick delivery and e-commerce platforms.
The food regulator has given September 30, 2026, as the deadline for instant delivery services and online platforms. These changes will ensure customers receive complete product information before buying.
FSSAI CEO Rajit Punhani told NDTV Profit that stricter monitoring for e-commerce and quick delivery platforms is underway. He said companies cannot sell poor-quality or expired food products online.
Platforms must show expiry details
Under the new system, customers will see packet information before purchasing any food item. The details will include product information and the final date for safe use.
Therefore, buyers can know the usable period before confirming their orders. FSSAI will check online food products like items sold through physical stores.
Additionally, the regulator will increase monitoring of food labels. Companies must ensure their labels provide accurate information about products.
As consumer awareness grows, checking food details has become more important. Hence, businesses must maintain transparency about their listed products.
Online platforms will face responsibility
Rajit Punhani said platforms cannot avoid responsibility by calling themselves only aggregators. Websites and apps must remain accountable for listed and sold food products.
Meanwhile, FSSAI has increased action against food companies in recent months. The regulator issued over 150 notices to major brands.
These notices involved incorrect advertisements, wrong information and food label violations. FSSAI continues monitoring companies for compliance.
FSSAI recorded 33,000 cases in one year
During the last year, FSSAI registered around 33,000 cases. The regulator also imposed penalties exceeding ₹1 crore.
Regarding criticism about smaller fines, Rajit Punhani said even small penalties affect brands. He added that such large action numbers show FSSAI measures are working effectively.
Furthermore, the upcoming changes aim to improve food transparency. Customers will receive clearer details before ordering packaged products online.
