The exit poll results following the assembly elections in five states show Congress’s mixed performance. The party has seen some positive trends, particularly in South India, but it also faces challenges in several regions.
Congress Finds Hope in South India
In southern India, Congress is witnessing some relief. In Kerala, where anti-incumbency sentiment was expected to rise, Congress seems to have capitalized on the dissatisfaction. Exit polls suggest that after Karnataka, Congress may form the government in Kerala as well, strengthening its position in the region.
The news is also positive from Tamil Nadu, where the DMK alliance is expected to retain power. Congress is part of this alliance, which means it could stay in power in the state. If this prediction holds, Congress will continue to have a significant presence in Tamil Nadu.
Struggles in West Bengal and Assam
However, Congress’s performance in West Bengal is far from promising. Once a stronghold for the party, the exit polls suggest it may only secure two seats. The situation in Assam is similarly bleak, with Congress struggling to secure more than 30 seats. The party had leveled serious accusations against BJP and the chief minister during the campaign, but it failed to capitalize on those allegations.
Puducherry also paints a grim picture for Congress. According to exit polls, the party is unlikely to cross 10 seats in the region.
Weakening Presence in Northern and Northeastern India
Looking at the overall picture, Congress’s position appears weak in Northern and Northeastern India. From Gujarat to Assam, the party seems to be losing its foothold. In Northern India, Congress’s presence is shrinking, and it now holds sway in only a few states.
A Slight Relief in the South
In South India, however, Congress has a better outlook. If it wins Kerala and forms a government with its allies in Tamil Nadu, it could secure some relief. The exit polls suggest that while the overall election results are not favorable for Congress, there is still a glimmer of hope in some states.
