Many people choose bank lockers to protect cash, jewellery, and important documents. They trust banks because lockers offer better safety than keeping valuables at home. However, theft from these secure spaces can create major financial losses for customers.
According to government information, several bank locker theft cases occurred in recent years. The government informed Parliament that public sector banks recorded 40 locker theft cases during the last five financial years.
The data covered the period from 2021-22 to 2025-26. Several states reported such incidents during this period.
Bank Of India And Central Bank Report Highest Cases
Government figures showed that different public sector banks recorded theft complaints. Bank of India reported 14 cases during this period. Similarly, Central Bank of India also recorded 14 theft cases.
Meanwhile, State Bank of India reported 10 such incidents. These figures highlight concerns around locker security despite existing safety arrangements.
Uttar Pradesh Recorded Highest Locker Theft Cases
The government data placed Uttar Pradesh at the top among states reporting bank locker theft cases. The state recorded 18 incidents during the mentioned financial years.
Furthermore, Jharkhand ranked second with 12 cases. Maharashtra reported five cases during this period.
Additionally, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Haryana each recorded one case. However, financial year 2025-26 did not report any bank locker theft incident for the first time.
Are Bank Lockers Completely Risk-Free For Customers
People use bank lockers because they consider them secure for valuable items. Banks provide several safety measures, including CCTV cameras, security guards, and strong locker systems.
However, customers should not consider lockers completely free from risks. Therefore, people should understand bank rules before storing valuables.
If theft occurs or bank negligence causes loss, customers receive limited compensation. Customers should carefully read the locker agreement and keep a copy.
Important Things To Check Before Taking Bank Locker
Before choosing a locker, customers should check security arrangements like guards and CCTV systems. Additionally, they can consider separate insurance for valuable items kept inside lockers.
Moreover, customers should appoint a nominee while taking a locker. This helps families during unexpected situations.
If customers do not use lockers for a long period, banks can take action according to rules.
Finally, customers should provide updated mobile numbers and email details to banks. This helps them receive information about any important events.
