Assam politics intensified sharply during the final campaign day, and developments quickly reached Delhi. Congress leader Pawan Khera faced action after serious allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife. Subsequently, Assam Police, along with Delhi Police, reached Khera’s residence on Tuesday. However, sources confirmed that Khera remained absent and currently stayed outside Delhi.
Allegations and Political Escalation
Earlier, Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi raised strong allegations against the Chief Minister. They questioned foreign assets and companies linked to his family. Notably, Khera made these claims during a press conference in New Delhi, just four days before April 9 voting. Later, Congress repeated similar questions during a Guwahati briefing.
Moreover, Congress demanded answers on three points. First, they asked about alleged property in Dubai. Second, they questioned companies in Wyoming, United States. Third, they raised concerns about investments in shell companies. Meanwhile, Khera alleged that Sarma’s wife held three passports from UAE, Antigua and Barbuda, and Egypt, expiring in 2027, 2031, and 2029.
Context: Congress Justification and Statements
When questioned about timing, Khera explained that verification required time despite earlier information. Additionally, Congress demanded that Sarma submit an affidavit to the Election Commission. They asked for details regarding Dubai property, Wyoming companies, and shell investments.
Furthermore, Gaurav Gogoi addressed counter-allegations about Pakistan bank accounts. He stated confidently that such claims remained false. He even said he could swear on the Bhagavad Gita. However, he questioned whether Sarma could do the same.
Sharp Political Rhetoric
Meanwhile, Khera intensified remarks against Sarma’s credibility. He suggested that Sarma might avoid truth even under oath. He also questioned Sarma’s religious sincerity. Consequently, Congress pushed strongly for transparency through affidavit disclosures.
At the same time, political tensions rose sharply ahead of voting. The timing of allegations added pressure on both parties. Therefore, the issue became central to campaign narratives in Assam.
Legal Response and Counteraction
In response, Himanta Biswa Sarma reacted strongly to the allegations. He confirmed that his wife filed a police complaint against Khera. He described the claims as false and misleading. Earlier, Sarma also warned about legal action against Khera for spreading incorrect information.
Forward Look
Going forward, legal proceedings may shape the political narrative further. Additionally, authorities could escalate investigation steps depending on findings. Meanwhile, voters will closely watch developments before polling day. Therefore, this controversy could influence electoral momentum significantly.
