Akhilesh Yadav Turns Saffron Politics Blue? SP’s New Strategy Targets Dalit and Gen-Z Votes

Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh elections, Samajwadi Party introduces a blue dress code and shifts symbols to strengthen its PDA strategy.

Akhilesh Yadav’s Blue Shift Sparks Political Buzz Before

Political activity has intensified before the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party has changed its traditional appearance and approach.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav appeared wearing a blue scarf instead of the usual red one during a meeting with district and city presidents. Additionally, the party announced a new blue dress code for Samajwadi Party student wing members.

Akhilesh Yadav instructed student wing leaders and workers to wear blue shirts with blue pants. They can also wear blue T-shirts with blue jeans. Consequently, the decision has created discussions across political circles.

Traditionally, SP leaders appear in white kurta-pyjamas with red caps and red scarves. However, blue remains strongly associated with the Bahujan Samaj Party and Dalit politics.

Blue Colour Becomes New Political Symbol

The Samajwadi Party has changed the student wing dress code to connect with Dalit voters and Gen-Z youth. Therefore, party workers appeared in the new blue outfits during the student wing conference in Lucknow.

The move aims to send a message among Dalit and backward-class youth active in colleges and universities. Through this change, SP wants to show respect toward their identity and symbols.

In Uttar Pradesh politics, colours hold strong importance. The BSP traditionally used blue as a symbol connected with Dalit politics and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideology. Meanwhile, SP remained associated with red and green colours.

Since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, SP started adopting elements linked with BSP politics. Although the party follows Ram Manohar Lohia and Jayaprakash Narayan’s ideas, Akhilesh Yadav also highlights Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram’s thoughts.

PDA Strategy Behind SP’s New Move

Akhilesh Yadav has worked beyond the traditional Yadav-Muslim support base in recent years. His focus has expanded toward Dalit voters through the PDA formula of backward, Dalit, and minority communities.

The PDA strategy helped SP during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Now, the party plans to continue this approach for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

Furthermore, SP wants support from Dalit voters who traditionally formed BSP’s base. Political analysts believe the blue dress code directly targets young Dalit communities.

According to analysts, SP wants to present itself beyond backward-class politics. The party aims to project a broader social justice platform.

Ambedkarite Outreach Ahead of 2027 Battle

During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Akhilesh raised PDA, Constitution, and reservation issues strongly. This helped him attract Dalit and backward-class voters together.

Now, he wants to maintain and expand this support before the 2027 elections. Wearing a blue scarf and introducing blue clothing reflects this effort.

The blue colour also represents the Ambedkarite movement and constitutional protection. By adopting it, SP aims to present itself as a protector of constitutional values.

Therefore, this change appears larger than a simple dress code decision. It signals a possible social and ideological shift in Uttar Pradesh politics.
