Condemnation of US Actions
Baqae accused the United States of armed looting and unlawful maritime attacks, stating these acts violate international law.
He highlighted that such actions compromise global peace and endanger secure, independent maritime navigation routes.
Details of the Incident
The attack occurred near Oman’s coast on a commercial vessel carrying 24 Indian sailors.
During the assault, 21 sailors survived, while three crew members initially went missing. Later, authorities recovered two bodies.
Chief engineer Patanala Suresh remains unaccounted for, with survival prospects described as extremely low by officials.
Previous Attacks and Context
This incident marks the third attack on Indian-crewed vessels within three days in the region.
Earlier strikes included vessels targeted by the US Navy under allegations of violating sanctions while transporting Iranian oil.
Indian Government Response
India’s Ministry of External Affairs reacted strongly, summoning US diplomat Jason Meeks to lodge a formal protest.
Additional Secretary (USA) Nagraj Naidu emphasized that Indian sailors’ lives are non-negotiable and must be protected.
The government also raised the issue at the UN Security Council, demanding immediate cessation of attacks.
Strategic and Diplomatic Implications
Analysts note that India faces a complex challenge: preserving relations with the US while ensuring sailor safety.
Iran’s statement underscores regional tensions, highlighting the geopolitical risks of ongoing US-Iran confrontations in the Strait of Hormuz.
Ongoing Monitoring and Rescue Efforts
Indian authorities maintain close coordination with Omani officials to track missing sailors and secure all surviving crew members.
The government continues to monitor maritime routes, emphasizing the safety of merchant vessels and Indian nationals abroad.
Calls for Accountability
Baqae urged the international community to hold the US responsible for violating maritime law and endangering civilian sailors.
He stated that ignoring such conduct undermines global security and stability, raising concerns about future navigation in strategic waterways.
