K Annamalai, former Tamil Nadu BJP state president, resigned from the party on Friday, June 5. He stated that he is initiating a new political movement immediately. Moreover, he appealed to citizens to join and support this grassroots initiative for a transparent political system.
Political Background and Early Career
Recalling his journey, Annamalai mentioned he undertook an internship with DMDK in 2009. Later, in August 2020, he joined BJP and rose rapidly within the party ranks. Annamalai explained that actor Rajinikanth had invited him to join his proposed political party, but he declined to honor a prior commitment to BJP national general secretary B.L. Santosh.
New Political Movement: “We The Leader”
Annamalai described that his movement will focus on clean and transparent politics rooted in local communities. He announced the movement’s name as “We The Leader”. Additionally, a parallel initiative, “APJ Abdul Kalam Ethics in Politics”, will train members in political ethics and leadership, fostering integrity among participants. The new party will implement term limits to prevent nepotism and family-driven politics.
Respect for PM Modi
Despite leaving BJP, Annamalai expressed respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasized that he will raise disagreements with the party or government respectfully and clearly. He recalled opposing the three-language policy even while part of BJP, signaling independent judgment on policy matters.
Reasons for BJP Resignation
Annamalai explained that he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to voice concerns and clarify his positions before resigning. He stressed that he did not resign silently or remotely but presented his perspective respectfully to party leadership before parting ways.
