The Election Commission has announced elections for 24 Rajya Sabha seats. These seats will fall vacant during June and July. Besides this, the commission has announced bypoll dates for two Rajya Sabha seats. These bypolls will take place in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Therefore, a major Rajya Sabha election schedule now stands clear.
Voting And Results On June 18
Rajya Sabha elections will take place in 10 states. Current members from these states will complete their terms between June 21 and July 19. According to the Election Commission, voting for the biennial elections will happen on June 18. Moreover, results will come on the same day. The commission will issue the notification on June 1. Candidates can file nominations until June 8.
State-Wise Seat Details
The election will cover several states across the country. Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka will vote for four seats each. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will vote for three seats each. Jharkhand will see elections for two seats. Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram will vote for one seat each. The last date for nomination filing remains June 8.
Maharashtra Bypoll After Pawar Resignation
The Election Commission has also announced bypolls for two Rajya Sabha seats. Both seats became vacant after leaders resigned from their posts. In Maharashtra, one seat fell vacant after Sunetra Pawar resigned. Her term ran until July 4, 2028. However, she resigned on May 6 after becoming an MLA.
Tamil Nadu Seat Also Falls Vacant
Tamil Nadu will also see a Rajya Sabha bypoll. AIADMK leader CV Shanmugam resigned from Rajya Sabha membership on May 7. He stepped down after becoming an MLA from Mailam in the Tamil Nadu assembly election. His Rajya Sabha term would have ended on June 29, 2028.
June 18 Becomes Key Date
As per the commission’s schedule, voting for these seats will take place on June 18. The results will also come that day. Therefore, June 18 will decide the new Rajya Sabha representation across 10 states and two bypoll seats.
