Ganga Expressway: ₹11,265 Toll on Heavy Vehicles, ₹1,800 for Cars, Travel Time Cut, But Costs Soar!

Ganga Expressway's toll tax hikes for various vehicles are set, offering faster travel but at a higher cost for commuters

The long-awaited Ganga Expressway is finally open. However, the toll tax rates on the 594 km stretch are hefty. Starting from May 2026, travelers will face significant charges depending on their vehicle types. While the travel time will drastically reduce, the cost of using this route has increased.

Toll Charges Based on Vehicle Types

For a single trip on the expressway, vehicles will need to pay different amounts depending on their class. Cars will pay ₹1,800 for one-way travel, and light commercial vehicles (LCV) will pay ₹2,840. Buses and trucks will face the highest toll fees at ₹5,720. Heavy machinery and multi-axle vehicles will pay a whopping ₹11,265.

The toll rates are determined through FASTag systems. The expressway will feature 14 toll plazas, with two major ones at Meerut and Prayagraj, and several ramp plazas for entry-exit points.

Shorter Travel Time, But Increased Costs

While the toll rates might be steep, the Ganga Expressway promises reduced travel time. Previously, the 594 km journey from Meerut to Prayagraj could take 10-12 hours. However, with the expressway, travelers can now cover the distance in just 6-7 hours, with speeds reaching up to 120 km/h. This expressway, India’s longest greenfield project, is crucial for connecting the eastern and western parts of Uttar Pradesh.

However, these toll charges could prove burdensome for regular commuters, particularly for those who frequently use this route. Small traders and ordinary citizens who rely on this path could find themselves facing higher travel expenses.

Previous Toll Expectations and Final Rates

Initially, the expected toll charges were between ₹1,500-1,515, but the final decision set it at ₹1,800 for cars. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this expressway in Hardoi on April 29, 2026. This project represents a significant step in making Uttar Pradesh an “expressway state.” The government expects better connectivity to boost trade, tourism, and industrial growth. Still, commuters will have to bear the brunt of the higher tolls.

How the New Toll Rates Compare to Other Expressways

The toll rates for the Agra-Lucknow Expressway (which also connects Kanpur) also increased in April 2026. For a car or jeep, the toll now stands at ₹655-675. Light commercial vehicles (LCVs) will pay ₹1,035, and buses or trucks will pay ₹2,150. This 302 km-long, six-lane expressway has a speed limit of 100 km/h.
