Government has provided major relief to users of WhatsApp, Telegram, and similar messaging platforms across India. Moreover, Department of Telecommunications has extended the SIM binding deadline, giving companies time until the end of this year.
What SIM Binding Means for Users
SIM binding requires messaging apps to work only on devices using the same SIM used during registration. Additionally, if users remove, change, or deactivate that SIM, the app will automatically log them out.
Why Government Extended Timeline
Meanwhile, Department of Telecommunications extended the timeline after stakeholders raised technical challenges in implementing the system. Furthermore, authorities began informing platforms about this extension from March 30.
Messaging platforms, along with companies like Google and Apple, requested additional time to meet compliance requirements. Additionally, Apple stated that limitations within its iOS ecosystem prevented immediate implementation, while it now works on solutions.
Moreover, Meta has also engaged in discussions with the government regarding this issue.
Reason Behind SIM Binding Rule
Government introduced SIM binding rules to reduce cyber fraud incidents across digital platforms. Additionally, officials observed that apps using mobile numbers allowed access even without active SIM presence.
Therefore, this created security risks within telecom systems and enabled fraud from outside the country. Consequently, authorities pushed for stricter controls through SIM-based verification systems.
Original Timeline and Changes
Initially, the government had given messaging platforms 90 days to implement SIM binding requirements. However, after receiving requests and reviewing technical issues, authorities extended the deadline until the end of 2026.
What Lies Ahead
As platforms work toward compliance, users may see stricter access controls once implementation begins fully. Therefore, future updates will determine how seamlessly companies integrate SIM binding into their systems.
