The India AI Impact Summit 2026 opened with high expectations. However, Bill Gates will not deliver his keynote address. The Gates Foundation confirmed the decision after careful consideration. Organisers had scheduled him to speak at Bharat Mandapam today.
Foundation Reverses Decision Within 24 Hours
A day earlier, the Gates Foundation confirmed his scheduled appearance. Nevertheless, the organisation reversed that position on Thursday. The foundation stated that Gates stepped aside to keep focus on the summit’s priorities. Consequently, Ankur Vora will represent the foundation at the event.
Ankur Vora leads the foundation’s Africa and India offices. Moreover, he will address delegates later during the summit. The foundation reiterated its commitment to India’s health and development goals. Therefore, officials emphasised continuity in partnership despite the change.
Epstein Files Controversy Fuels Backlash
Meanwhile, scrutiny around Gates intensified over the Epstein files. His name appeared multiple times in documents linked to Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein died in prison in 2019 after a sex trafficking conviction. As a result, online backlash grew during Gates’ India visit.
Earlier, the Andhra Pradesh government welcomed Gates at Gannavaram Airport. Nara Lokesh and cabinet colleagues received him formally. Lokesh shared a welcome message on social media. However, critics questioned Gates’ presence amid the controversy.
Several social media users accused him of treating India as a testing ground. Others linked their criticism to allegations surrounding Epstein. Nevertheless, Gates dismissed those claims as absolutely false and absurd. He consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Summit Continues With Global Leaders
Despite the development, the summit continues with global participation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address delegates during the event. Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron will speak at the gathering. Later, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres will deliver remarks.
Furthermore, technology leaders such as Sam Altman will join discussions. Business leaders, including Mukesh Ambani, will also take the stage. Therefore, organisers expect strong engagement despite the keynote shift.
Focus Shifts Back to AI Agenda
Ultimately, organisers aim to steer attention toward artificial intelligence priorities. The India AI Impact Summit highlights innovation, governance, and responsible deployment. As discussions continue, stakeholders will watch how global leaders shape India’s AI roadmap.
