Supreme Court On Firecrackers: No Nationwide Ban As Diwali Emotions Matter

The Supreme Court said it does not plan a complete nationwide ban on firecrackers, while highlighting concerns over continuous bursting and public health.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday clarified that it does not intend to impose a complete ban on firecrackers across the country. The court said Diwali connects deeply with people’s emotions, and authorities cannot ignore that sentiment completely. However, the court also stated that it cannot allow people to burst firecrackers throughout the entire 24-hour period.

The court highlighted that continuous firecracker use can affect sick people, elderly citizens and children. Therefore, the court balanced public concerns with the emotional connection people have with the festival.
