The investigation into IIT Bombay student Sahil Ravindra Wakode’s suspected suicide continues. Mumbai Crime Branch is examining statements, digital evidence, and claims linked to the case.
Meanwhile, IIT Bombay management sent accused professor Suryanarayan Dulla on leave. The institute also formed a 10-member panel for an internal investigation.
Crime Branch Examines Students, Parents And Institute Members
Mumbai Crime Branch recorded statements from Sahil’s parents during the investigation. Additionally, officers questioned students who attended his exam, stayed near him, or knew him.
The agency is collecting details from different people to understand the sequence of events. Furthermore, investigators may record statements from IIT Bombay professors and faculty members.
According to information gathered during the probe, officials may question Sahil’s parents again. This could happen if investigators require further clarification.
Accused Professor Called For Questioning
The Crime Branch summoned professor Suryanarayan Dulla for questioning. Investigators may seek information about several aspects connected with the case.
Earlier, Dulla served as the Dean of Student Affairs at the institute. However, IIT Bombay management decided to send him on leave.
Additionally, the institute created a 10-member panel for internal investigation. The panel is expected to submit its report within one week.
Locked iPhone Becomes Key Part Of Investigation
Sahil’s locked iPhone has become an important part of the probe. Police are trying to access data through technical assistance.
The phone reportedly includes ChatGPT history. Investigators want this information to verify claims and understand Sahil’s final days.
Moreover, the Crime Branch is matching statements, digital evidence, and other collected material. The agency is examining every available detail.
Viral 2024 Advisory Screenshot Under Investigation
Meanwhile, a screenshot of an alleged IIT Bombay advisory from July 2024 is circulating online. The claim says professor Suryanarayan Dulla and his team issued the email on 27 July 2024.
However, independent verification of the screenshot and email has not taken place. The Crime Branch is also examining its authenticity.
The alleged advisory asked students to maintain an inclusive campus environment. It reportedly advised students to avoid discrimination based on caste, religion, gender, and social background.
The message also allegedly discouraged questions about caste, birth, admission category, JEE Advanced rank, or GATE score.
Family Allegations Led To FIR Registration
During Sahil’s mid-semester exam, professor Dulla acted as course instructor and invigilator. The allegation states that Sahil used a mobile phone inside the examination hall.
According to the family, Sahil photographed the question paper and uploaded it on AI platforms like ChatGPT. They alleged that Dulla threatened suspension and mentally harassed him afterward.
The family also alleged caste-based remarks against Sahil. Based on these allegations, police registered an FIR under BNS Section 108 and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
