Amid discussions over Hindu temple security in Bangladesh, a theft case emerged from North Kalibari Temple in Faridpur city. A Kali stone idol, gold ornaments and other religious items went missing from the temple. After the temple committee filed a complaint, police started investigating the incident.
According to an IANS report, the temple committee stated that the theft happened between 10:30 PM on 19 September and 5:45 AM on 20 September. Meanwhile, devotees reached the temple for morning prayers and found broken locks on the doors. After noticing the damage, they informed police about the incident.
Kali Idol Weighed Around 20 Kilograms
Temple priest Debi Prasad Chakraborty said thieves removed the Kali idol from inside the temple. The idol stood above a white marble Shiva statue. However, thieves did not remove the Shiva statue from its place.
Furthermore, the temple committee said the stolen Kali idol was made from Kashti stone. The idol weighed around 20 kilograms. The complete structure reportedly weighed nearly 40 kilograms.
Additionally, thieves took away gold ornaments placed on the idol. The ornaments weighed around 7 to 8 tolas. Small brass idols of Lord Vishnu, Radha-Krishna and Mansa also went missing.
The temple management also reported the theft of a silver snake. The snake wrapped around the Shivling and weighed around 8 to 10 tolas.
Police And CID Begin Investigation
Temple committee president Kushal Chakraborty said CCTV cameras were not working during the incident. The thieves first broke the locks and later damaged multiple locks protecting the iron shutter.
After discovering the theft, officials contacted the national emergency service 999. Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) teams reached the location. They collected evidence from the crime scene.
Faridpur Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Mahmudul Hasan said authorities are treating the case seriously. Police teams are working to identify and arrest the accused.
Currently, authorities have not shared any update about recovering the stolen idol and religious items.
Earlier Temple Theft Incident In Faridpur
This was not the first temple theft case reported in Faridpur recently. In August 2026, thieves reportedly stole brass idols of Radha-Krishna and Gopal from a temple in Nagarkanda.
Moreover, that incident also involved a reported CCTV-related issue.
