Tata Sons has extended N Chandrasekaran’s chairman term for another five years. The decision came during a board meeting held in Mumbai on Thursday. The board approved his continuation as Tata Group chairman. His current tenure was scheduled to end in February 2027.
Tata Sons Board Approves Five-Year Extension
The Tata Sons board discussed the group’s chairmanship during the meeting. Following the discussion, members approved Chandrasekaran’s five-year extension.
The decision arrived before his existing term reached completion. Therefore, Chandrasekaran will continue leading the Tata Group for another five years.
However, the development gained attention because Chandrasekaran recently expressed different plans. Last month, he said he did not want another chairman term.
Chandrasekaran Earlier Did Not Seek Another Term
Earlier, Chandrasekaran said he wanted to step down after his current tenure. He explained that he did not seek reappointment as chairman. Additionally, he mentioned a February board meeting discussion. During that meeting, one Tata Sons board member did not support his five-year extension. Before the board meeting, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust recommended an extension unanimously. However, the issue continued without a solution for nearly six months.
At that time, Chandrasekaran said leadership clarity was necessary for the group’s future.
Decision Comes Amid Tata Sons Listing Issue
The extension decision arrived after the Reserve Bank of India rejected Tata Sons’ request for a listing exemption. According to the reference, RBI rules may require Tata Sons to follow stock market listing requirements. Meanwhile, N Chandrasekaran first became Tata Sons chairman in 2017. Later, Tata appointed him again in 2022 for another five-year term.
Now, the latest extension will mark his third term as chairman. His current tenure will end in February 2027 before the new period begins.
