India Sends Nepal 654 MW Power Boost After Devastating Flood Crisis

India approves additional electricity supply for Nepal after floods damaged hydropower projects, ensuring 18 hours of daily power support.

Electricity remains essential for every country’s daily life. However, Nepal recently faced a major power challenge after severe floods damaged several areas.

The floods affected homes, vehicles and important infrastructure across Nepal. Additionally, the disaster impacted the country’s electricity generation capacity.

Therefore, India stepped forward to provide additional electricity support to its neighbouring country. The move aims to reduce Nepal’s power shortage during this difficult period.

India Approves Additional Electricity Supply

Nepal’s hydropower projects suffered heavy damage due to the floods. Consequently, the country faced difficulties in maintaining electricity production levels.

Meanwhile, India decided to increase power supply through two transmission lines. The electricity will reach Nepal through these routes.

The first route includes the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 KV single-circuit line. This line can supply a maximum of 54 MW electricity.

The second route includes the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 KV double-circuit line. This connection can provide up to 600 MW power.

Power Ministry Clears Export Plan

The Ministry of Power approved the electricity export to Nepal. This decision will help Nepal meet a large part of its electricity requirement.

Furthermore, India received permission to export up to 654 MW power. The supply will continue from September 13, 2026, until December 31, 2026.

During this period, Nepal Electricity Authority will receive up to 654 MW electricity daily. The supply will continue for 18 hours every day.

India Previously Supported Bangladesh

India has also supported another neighbouring country during an energy crisis. Earlier, Bangladesh faced difficulties due to electricity shortages.

At that time, Bangladesh requested additional diesel supplies from India. Additionally, India continued providing electricity and fuel support.

Therefore, India maintained assistance to help Bangladesh manage its power challenges.
