Delhi Building Collapse Timeline: 20 Years, 10 Disasters and 102 Lives Lost in Deadly Structures

From Lalita Park tragedy to Satyam Niketan PG collapse, Delhi has witnessed repeated building disasters caused by weak structures and unsafe practices.

Delhi is once again facing grief after the Satya Niketan PG building collapse. On Sunday afternoon, a 30-year-old five-storey paying guest building suddenly collapsed. The incident happened around 1 PM and killed six students. However, Delhi has witnessed several similar tragedies during the last two decades. According to media reports, between 2006 and 2026, around 102 people lost their lives in building accidents. Weak structures, illegal floors, poor foundations, and unsafe excavation caused these disasters.

Major building collapse incidents that shook Delhi

In 2026, the Satya Niketan collapse occurred in southwest Delhi. The five-storey PG building lacked maintenance and safety standards. The disaster killed six students.

Meanwhile, another 2026 incident occurred near Saket in Saidulajab. An upper-floor illegal construction added extra pressure. The structure collapsed and six people died.

Additionally, heavy rainfall caused a four-storey under-construction building collapse in Rohini Sector. The accident killed three people.

Earlier, Satya Niketan witnessed another tragedy in 2022. A repair-related accident inside an old building killed two people.

Furthermore, a 20-year-old three-storey building collapsed in Mustafabad during July 2022. One person died while several others suffered injuries.

In September 2021, a 70-year-old three-storey building collapsed in Sabzi Mandi, Malka Ganj. The incident killed two children.

Moreover, a four-storey old building collapsed in Dev Nagar, Karol Bagh, during February 2019. Fortunately, nobody lost their life.

In September 2011, a four-storey building collapsed in Chandni Mahal, Old Delhi. Unsafe basement excavation near the structure caused the collapse. Seven people died in the tragedy.

The Lalita Park tragedy in Laxmi Nagar remains Delhi’s deadliest building disaster. In November 2010, a five-storey illegal building collapsed due to poor construction and Yamuna water accumulation. The tragedy killed 71 people and injured more than 65 others.

Finally, in February 2007, a construction structure collapsed in Uttam Nagar. Four workers died after getting trapped.

In December 2006, Shahdara’s Vishwas Nagar also witnessed a building accident. A multi-storey under-construction building collapsed, leading to a major rescue operation.

Why Delhi continues to witness building disasters

Delhi’s resettlement colonies, old areas, and student hubs like Satya Niketan and Mukherjee Nagar face repeated risks. Small plots measuring 50 to 60 square yards often carry five to six-storey buildings without engineering assessments. Additionally, people add extra floors without municipal approval. Structural and fire safety audits often remain limited to paperwork.

Students and tenants pay ₹12,000 to ₹18,000 per bed. However, many buildings ignore seepage issues and structural cracks.
