A devastating fire broke out at the gynaecology ward of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad. The incident killed 15 newborn babies.
According to Dawn’s report, the ward had 16 children during the fire. Doctors managed to rescue only one newborn from the affected ward.
However, PIMS spokesperson Dr Aneza Jalil said some children had received discharge during the night. Therefore, authorities could not confirm the exact number of babies immediately.
Short Circuit Triggered Fire In Early Morning
Dr Aneza Jalil explained that a short circuit caused the fire inside the ward. The incident occurred around 7 am.
Meanwhile, firefighters managed to control the flames. However, the cooling process required additional time after extinguishing the fire.
Investigation Committee To Examine Fire Cause
According to Geo News, the district administration sent rescue teams immediately after receiving information. The rescue operation included six fire vehicles and four ambulances.
Furthermore, authorities formed an investigation committee under the leadership of an additional deputy commissioner. The committee will examine the reason behind the fire.
The administration will also investigate how the incident happened and identify possible factors behind the tragedy.

Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, also known as PIMS Islamabad, remains among the major medical centres in the city.
The hospital includes several important facilities. These include Islamabad Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Mother and Child Health Centre, Burn Care Centre, and Cardiac Centre.
