National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met China’s Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing. The meeting gained importance ahead of the BRICS summit.
Chinese President Xi Jinping may visit India for the September 12-13 BRICS summit in New Delhi. However, officials have not officially confirmed Xi’s visit yet.
Both sides expect a possible meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping. The leaders may discuss ways to improve bilateral relations.
Special Representatives dialogue focuses on border stability
Before the 25th round of Special Representatives talks, Doval and Han Zheng discussed border peace. They explored steps to strengthen stability in border areas.
Additionally, both sides discussed improving economic, political and multilateral cooperation. They focused on enhancing relations through mutual understanding.
Doval reached Beijing after an invitation from Wang Yi, a member of China’s Communist Party Politburo and Foreign Minister.
Moreover, Doval will join Wang Yi for India-China Special Representatives discussions on the boundary dispute. The dialogue process started in 2003.
The talks aim to address the 3,488-kilometre India-China border dispute. Both countries continue using this mechanism for boundary discussions.
S Jaishankar highlights importance of border peace
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stressed the need for peace and stability along border areas. His statement came after reports of aggressive behaviour by Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri region.
Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum, Jaishankar said border conditions influence overall relations. He recalled the difficult period between summer 2020 and autumn 2024.
According to Jaishankar, peaceful border areas remain essential for stronger India-China relations. He added that border situations largely determine ties.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on August 12 that the border situation remains generally stable.
