Iran has blamed Ukraine for an attack on an Iranian-flagged commercial ship. The incident happened in the Caspian Sea. The Iranian government said Ukraine’s action would not remain unanswered. Moreover, Iran called the attack a clear violation of the United Nations Charter. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi shared a strong response after phone talks. He spoke with EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
According to Araghchi, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered the attack. He claimed the strike killed one sailor onboard the vessel.
Iran Claims Attack Was Linked to Israel
Araghchi said Ukraine carried out the attack after Israel’s request. He claimed the move aimed to involve Europe in the West Asia conflict. Furthermore, the Iranian minister called it a serious breach of the UN Charter. He added that those responsible in Kyiv would face a response. Iran’s foreign ministry said Ukrainian forces targeted the ship early Saturday, March 26. The vessel carried the Iranian flag during its journey. The ship travelled from Russia’s Astrakhan port toward Iran’s Anzali port. The attack destroyed the vessel’s control room completely.
Additionally, one sailor died during the incident. Another crew member suffered serious injuries after the attack.
Iran Warns Ukraine Over Military Action
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi clearly indicated that Tehran would not ignore the incident. He said Iran would respond at the appropriate time and through a suitable method. Meanwhile, Iran also urged the international community to notice the incident. It requested global condemnation of the attack.
Growing Regional Security Concerns After Incident
The incident happened during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The conflict has already affected several countries.At the same time, military tensions between Iran and the United States continue. Therefore, the ship attack could bring more countries into a wider military confrontation. Europe and other regions may face greater security challenges. Moreover, the situation could affect regional stability and international maritime trade.
However, Ukraine has not yet given any official response to Iran’s allegations.
