French President Emmanuel Macron and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi created an unexpected viral moment at their joint press conference in Tokyo this week. Specifically, following their formal statements about international law and geopolitical cooperation, Takaichi performed a Dragon Ball Z-inspired Kamehameha gesture toward Macron. Furthermore, Macron immediately reciprocated the gesture, turning a diplomatic press conference into one of the most unexpected and widely shared moments in recent political history.

Macron Posts the Moment With One Word – Fusion

Macron subsequently posted a video of the interaction on his official X account with a single caption, “Fusion.” Specifically, this caption references the Fusion Dance that Son Goku teaches Goten and Trunks during Dragon Ball Z’s Buu Saga, resulting in the creation of the powerful warrior Gotenks. Additionally, Goku and Vegeta have fused multiple times across both Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, either through the Fusion Dance to become Gogeta or through the Potara Earrings to become Vegito. Consequently, Macron’s use of “Fusion” was a deliberate and culturally informed reference to the unification of two powerful forces working together toward a shared goal.

The Diplomatic Message Behind the Pop Culture Moment

However, the Kamehameha moment was not simply a lighthearted exchange between two anime fans. Specifically, the press conference centred on both leaders’ commitment to respect for international law and cooperation amid rising global tensions. Furthermore, Macron announced that France and Japan are unified in calling for an immediate ceasefire and the restoration of free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked since the US-Israel war on Iran began on February 28. Additionally, Takaichi reinforced this message by stating that with the international environment increasingly severe, cooperation between Japan and France carries exceptional meaning at this moment in history.

The cultural dimension of Macron’s Japan visit extended well beyond the press conference moment. Specifically, Macron posted on X that France is the second-biggest manga country in the world, after Japan, obviously. Furthermore, the night before the press conference, Macron attended a private dinner with Japanese authors, creators and publishers working across manga, anime, video games and trading cards. Additionally, legendary manga editor Kazuhiko Torishima, who worked directly with Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama throughout the serialisations of both Dr Slump and Dragon Ball, attended the dinner. Together, these cultural engagements reflect a deliberate effort by Macron to deepen the creative and cultural ties between France and Japan alongside the diplomatic relationship.

Macron Receives Signed Miyazaki Illustration

During his Tokyo visit, Macron also received a personally signed illustration of Porco Rosso from Studio Ghibli’s legendary director Hayao Miyazaki. Specifically, Macron posted the illustration on X alongside a statement expressing deep admiration for what the 1992 anime film’s protagonist represents. Furthermore, he wrote that Porco Rosso opposes the brutality of the world with an irrepressible idea of freedom. Additionally, Macron connected the character directly to the current global moment, writing that at a time when democracies must defend peace and freedom, Porco Rosso serves as a meaningful symbol. Consequently, the gesture from Miyazaki and Macron’s response added a significant layer of cultural depth to what was already a highly symbolic diplomatic visit.

Why This Moment Matters Beyond the Memes

Currently, the world is navigating one of its most serious geopolitical crises in decades. Specifically, the US-Israel war on Iran has caused severe economic disruption globally, driven energy prices to record levels and blocked a shipping route responsible for 20 per cent of the world’s energy supply. Therefore, France and Japan’s decision to anchor their diplomatic solidarity in the shared language of manga and anime, beloved by hundreds of millions worldwide, represents a conscious and calculated use of soft power. Together, the Kamehameha, the Fusion caption and the Miyazaki illustration sent a message that transcended formal diplomatic language and reached a global audience instantly.
