Government Cuts Takedown Time To 1 Hour Amid Fuel Rumours

Government tightens rules as fuel-related rumours spread during Middle East conflict, reduces social media content removal time from three hours to one hour

The government has stepped up action against fuel-related rumours during the ongoing Middle East conflict. Moreover, authorities have tightened rules for removing misleading content. Consequently, the response aims to control misinformation quickly.

Faster Action Against Social Media Content

The government plans to reduce content removal time to one hour. Earlier, platforms had up to three hours for such actions. However, rising rumours about fuel shortages pushed this decision.

Additionally, officials will finalise discussions with companies before issuing formal directions. Therefore, stricter timelines will soon come into effect.

Rumours Trigger Urgent Government Response

False claims about petrol, diesel, and LPG shortages spread rapidly online. Moreover, these rumours created unnecessary panic among people. Consequently, authorities moved to shorten the response window.

The government believes faster removal can prevent viral misinformation. Therefore, it has prioritised quick intervention across platforms.

Previous Changes In IT Rules

Earlier in February, the IT Ministry introduced important amendments. Moreover, these changes updated the Information Technology Rules, 2021.

Under new rules, platforms must remove content within two to three hours. Previously, companies received 24 to 36 hours for action. Therefore, enforcement has already become stricter.

Broader Crackdown On Online Content

Meanwhile, the government continues to expand its monitoring efforts. Additionally, authorities plan to redefine “objectionable” content categories.

These changes may include new restricted areas under digital rules. Furthermore, officials aim to strengthen content blocking mechanisms further.

Currently, the Home Ministry manages content blocking through the ‘Sahyog’ portal. However, authorities insist they act only against illegal material.

Reason Behind Tightening Rules

Officials said users complained about delayed action earlier. Moreover, longer timelines allowed misinformation to spread widely. Consequently, the government reduced response time significantly.

An official also noted that tech companies already have faster removal capabilities. Therefore, stricter timelines remain technically feasible for platforms.
