Munda’s Desperation
Munda explained his frustration. “I went several times, but they insisted on seeing the account holder. I dug up her grave to prove her death,” he said.
Bank’s Response to the Incident
Indian Overseas Bank, which sponsors Odisha Grameen Bank, quickly clarified. They stated they never requested the deceased’s physical presence.
The bank noted that Munda was informed that withdrawals could only be made with proper authorization. It was clarified that Munda returned with remains after the situation escalated.
Police and Authorities Step In
Patana police inspector Kiran Prasad Sahu said Munda was an illiterate man unfamiliar with formal banking processes. He added that the issue arose from poor communication.
Manas Dandpat, the local Block Development Officer, stated authorities would now step in to resolve the matter. Munda was confirmed as the rightful claimant.
What Happens Next
Authorities instructed the bank to release the funds after verification. This incident highlights the gap between banking processes and public understanding.
Munda’s case shows how difficult it is for people unaware of formal procedures, even leading to desperate actions.
