Rajpal Yadav, the popular Bollywood actor known for his roles in films like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Phir Hera Pheri, and Hungama, is still embroiled in a long-standing cheque bounce case, with no immediate relief in sight. Despite his efforts to settle the matter, the Delhi High Court recently adjourned his bail plea to February 16. However, his lawyer has provided some positive updates regarding the case, revealing that the actor has already paid ₹2.5 crore out of the ₹5 crore debt and is willing to pay more.
Rajpal Yadav’s Debt Payment Update
Rajpal Yadav’s lawyer, Bhaskar Upadhyay, addressed the media after the hearing, offering new insights into the ongoing legal battle. He confirmed that Yadav had already cleared ₹2.5 crore of the ₹5 crore debt, which the actor had borrowed in 2010 from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata (2012). Unfortunately, the film did not perform well commercially, leading to substantial financial losses and a legal dispute. The original ₹5 crore loan amount eventually ballooned to nearly ₹9 crore due to interest and other charges.
The lawyer emphasized that imprisonment should not be based solely on financial undertakings. “No one should be imprisoned just because of an undertaking. If this is purely a financial matter, we should be allowed to meet him in jail to understand the court’s stand on the previous undertaking,” Bhaskar Upadhyay explained in Hindi. He further clarified that they are willing to continue paying the owed amount and would deposit any further payments with the court.
A Long-Running Legal Dispute
The legal dispute began in 2010 when Rajpal borrowed ₹5 crore from the Delhi-based company, Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. The money was intended to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata, but the film’s commercial failure led to a series of financial challenges for the actor. In 2018, a magisterial court convicted Rajpal Yadav under the Negotiable Instruments Act for cheque dishonour, sentencing him to six months’ imprisonment. This conviction was upheld by a sessions court in 2019, and the total amount due has since escalated to nearly ₹9 crore.
Rajpal Yadav’s Attempt to Settle the Matter
Despite the gravity of the situation, Rajpal Yadav has shown a willingness to resolve the issue. According to his lawyer, ₹1 crore had already been deposited with the court registry earlier, and an additional ₹25 lakh cheque was presented during the recent hearing. Bhaskar Upadhyay reiterated that the actor is ready to continue depositing money to settle the case. “Whatever assistance we are receiving, we are ready to deposit it with the court,” he stated, highlighting the actor’s intent to clear the debt and resolve the matter.

What’s Next for Rajpal Yadav?
As the case continues, Rajpal Yadav’s legal team is hopeful that the court will recognize the actor’s efforts to repay the debt and provide a fair resolution. Yadav’s surrender to Tihar Jail on February 5 was a direct consequence of the Delhi High Court’s decision to decline further extensions on the cheque bounce case. The actor has since been in judicial custody, but his lawyer remains optimistic that the matter can be settled amicably if additional payments are made.
While Rajpal Yadav’s financial troubles have not yet come to an end, his efforts to repay the owed amount have been acknowledged. With ₹2.5 crore already paid and a commitment to deposit more, Yadav is making strides to resolve the ongoing cheque bounce case. The adjournment of his bail plea to February 16 means that the actor will have to wait a little longer for his relief, but his willingness to settle the case may play a crucial role in the final decision. As the case continues to unfold, Rajpal Yadav’s supporters are hoping for a swift resolution to bring this chapter to a close.
