Paris is considering India’s indigenously developed Pinaka rocket system. This move signals strengthening Indo France defence cooperation. Moreover, reports indicate a shift toward mutual arms procurement.
As India advances its $36 billion order for 114 Rafale jets from Dassault Aviation, France plans a reciprocal step. Traditionally, arms trade moved one way. However, this development reflects balance in procurement.
Ukraine War Creates Urgent Artillery Need
France currently faces artillery capability gaps. Ongoing Ukraine aid has depleted stockpiles significantly. French LRU systems based on M270 remain limited. Only nine units remain after donating four to Ukraine. Authorities plan to retire these systems by 2027.
Therefore, Paris seeks fast and mobile rocket replacements. In this context, Pinaka has emerged as frontrunner.

Why Pinaka Attracts France
Pinaka provides cost effective performance compared to Western systems such as United States HIMARS. The launcher delivers 90 to 130 kilometre range. It fires 12 rockets within 44 seconds.
Indian forces have deployed it in strikes on Pakistani positions. Consequently, it has proven reliability and impact. Brigadier General Stéphane Richou tested the system during his 2024 India visit. He praised its speed, mobility, and compatibility with NATO equipment.
Officials view it as interim solution until France’s FLP T rocket trials in mid 2026.
Indigenous Strength and Global Interest
India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation built Pinaka domestically. Analysts often describe it as wheeled rocket shotgun. The system can strike zones up to one kilometre wide. Its effective range spans 45 to 120 kilometres.
Six units together can launch 72 rockets rapidly. This capability can neutralise troops, vehicles, or enemy camps. The platform operates in all weather conditions.
India has deployed it operationally. Additionally, recent Armenia deal boosted international visibility. Its affordability and speed continue attracting global buyers. France now shows strong interest.
Indo France Defence Ties Reach New Phase
Defence cooperation between both nations is expanding rapidly. Joint production, technology sharing, and reciprocal deals mark this phase. The relationship is moving beyond traditional buyer seller model.
Recently, during President Emmanuel Macron three day India visit at India AI Impact Summit, both sides elevated ties to Special Global Strategic Partners. This upgrade strengthens defence, technology, and Indo Pacific collaboration under Horizon 2047 Roadmap.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the visit as elevating ties to new heights. He highlighted Rafale co production, innovation, and shared security goals. Meanwhile, Macron stated relations stand at their highest point. He emphasised deeper technology and strategic collaboration.
