Artificial intelligence no longer limits itself to answering queries. Instead, it rapidly strengthens its ability to write software programs.
Recently, discussions intensified over whether manual programming may soon fade away. Even NodeJS creator Ryan Dahl hinted that traditional development could transform.
Meanwhile, the internet debates which performs better in programming tasks: Anthropic’s Claude Code or xAI’s Grok Code. However, Elon Musk believes this comparison will soon lose relevance. According to him, programming will shortly become a common and accessible service.
Coding May Turn Into a Generic Product
On social media platform X, Musk responded to a post about AI programming. He stated that within this year, coding will evolve into a generic product.
He implied that future AI systems will reach such capability that asking which model performs better will seem pointless.
Meanwhile, Anthropic earlier claimed that its Claude Opus 4.6 model independently built a C-compiler within two weeks. Observers consider this milestone significant because creating a C-compiler involves complex technical processes.
Differences Between Models May Shrink
In another post, Musk suggested that Grok Code will improve substantially in coming months. He added that it might even surpass Claude Code.
However, he clarified that performance gaps between both systems will become extremely small. Consequently, identifying which model generated specific code may prove difficult.
He argued that advanced AI programming systems will make very few errors. Therefore, comparing them could become nearly impossible.
Musk compared this shift to self-driving technology, which gradually became more reliable over time.
A Future Without Manual Coding?
This statement does not mark Musk’s first prediction about programming’s evolution. Previously, he stated that by year end, people may not need to write code themselves.
Instead, AI could directly generate required binary instructions for machines. As a result, traditional compiler roles may decline.
AI’s Expanding Role in Tech Industry
Signs of AI’s expanding influence already appear within the technology sector. Recently, Spotify acknowledged that AI plays a significant role in several programming tasks.
Additionally, Dario Amodei admitted that his company may require fewer software engineers in the future than today.
